The Joys of Teaching Photography

From spending nearly every day as a professional life taking photos and creating something to changing tact and focusing more on helping others achieve that level is something I’ve had to adapt to over the past few years.

Nowadays I teach photography more than shoot – but it’s a path I’ve found enjoyable and still extremely rewarding, even if it isn’t my own photographs that get shown off.

Photography can be a hobby for the young and old generations but working professionally means you may have to be adaptive depending on the conditions/market/economy if you need to make ends meet.

How Can You Teach Photography?

There is great joy and fulfilment to be had as a photography tutor. It can be done online or in-person – it’s a really flexible approach depending on where your students are.

As a teacher, I’ve found offering feedback, critiques, and advice just as in demand as motivation and inspiration tips. We all need the urge to move forward however it comes to us. All this type of assistance can easily be offered online and more direct workshops can be done in person.

What Can You Teach Online?

Whether you want to be more of an online teacher there is tonnes of content you can produce from video critiques, written articles (blogs) and even go as far as creating a course. You need to think of delivering your content in as many forms as possible – video, audio and written.

Start off by building up a library of resources to point your potential students to. Create content for free but make sure it’s educational, fun, and not too long.

It’s a good idea to have a little stock of paid content (a course perhaps) for people who really like your free stuff and then you can start selling and building a business on the back of it.

Teaching Photography in-Person

Teaching in person is a totally different experience as you’re generally working in smaller groups or one-on-one. To get the best out of the lesson (for you and your ‘student’) – plan ahead. Getting to know what help they require and it will make the experience feel way more rewarding as a teacher.
